Shea trees across the Ugandan savanna at golden hour

Made in Uganda.

Shea trees grow wild across a band of African savanna. Our jars start at its eastern end.

Where it comes from

Shea trees grow across a belt of African savanna that runs from Senegal in the west to Uganda in the east. Ours is East African, from the eastern end.

East African shea is known for a softer, creamier butter than its West African cousin. It melts at the touch of a palm rather than needing to be worked. That texture is the reason Pure Shea can move from lips to cuticles to scalp without anything added to it, and it is the base every other jar in the house is built on.

Cold pressed, unrefined

Refining shea makes it white and odorless, every batch the same as the last. It also strips out much of what makes it worth using. Ours is pressed cold and left unrefined, so it arrives in the jar close to the way it left the nut. The color is ivory, not white. The scent is faint and nutty. The texture shifts with the weather, firmer in a cool room and softer in a warm one, and we did not add anything to stop it doing that.

100% cold-pressed, unrefined East African shea butter. As printed on the Pure Shea jar.

From tree to jar

Shea nuts are gathered from the ground after they fall. They are dried and shelled before they are pressed. The butter is made in Uganda. It is packaged in the USA and distributed from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Both of those facts are printed on the back of every jar.
