East Africa, before the jar.
Every jar of Pure Shea contains exactly one thing. The ingredient panel on the back has one line and then it stops. It is shea butter, pressed cold and left unrefined.
East African shea is known for being softer than the shea most people have met in a drugstore aisle. Warm a small amount between your palms and it gives way. That is why one jar can move from face to lips to cuticles to scalp, and why it is the base of Golden and Glowabe.
Because nothing is added, the texture changes with the weather. Firmer in a cool room, softer in a warm one. The label says so too: natural texture may vary with temperature. We could have added something to stop that. We did not.

People have used shea butter for generations.
